About the Artist

Sophie is the artist and animator behind City Illustrated’s guide to Florence and the creator of City Illustrated! Florence is the first city created on City Illustrated and even though she isn’t a local, Sophie decided to live like a Florentine for three months to do the beautiful city of Florence justice. Was it just an excuse to eat copious amounts of pasta? Probably.

Sophie is from Ireland with a German father and a mother who always instilled a passion for travel and other cultures. Having a love for history for as long as she can remember, she studied World Religions with Film Studies at Trinity College Dublin and then went on to pursue an MPhil in Public History and Cultural Heritage. Working in the tourism and educational sector, Sophie has traveled to four continents, lived for two years in Vietnam, and is regularly planning trips abroad on her motorcycle. She also has a passion for art, architecture, and illustration, which all came together to create City Illustrated.

“The idea behind City Illustrated is simple. Picture a Venn Diagram of where travel and culture meets art and that’s City Illustrated. Only our aim is to collaborate with some of the best artistic talents around the world so we can capture the unique, honest, and local essence of a city, captured through the lens of an artist.

City Illustrated is supposed to inform, but must always be fun. When art meets technology, learning never needs to be boring.”

Unable to choose one discipline, Sophie loves web design, graphic design, motion graphics, videography, UX/UI, illustration, content creation, and digital marketing, and regularly works in all these areas as a marketer and content creator at University College Dublin.
